The U.S. Department of Justice announced last month that its Civil Rights Division has opened an investigation into three school districts in Michigan to determine whether they use sexual orientation and gender ideology content in K-12.
Detroit Public Schools Community District, Godfrey-Lee Public Schools, and the Lansing School District also could be violating the privacy of girls and undermining their safety.
“This Department of Justice is fiercely committed to ending the growing trend of local school authorities embedding sexuality and gender ideology in every aspect of public education,” said Harmeet K. Dhillon, assistant attorney general of the Civil Rights Division.
The U.S. Supreme Court ruled for parents in Mahmoud v. Taylor, (2025), who sued the Montgomery County School Board in Maryland on the grounds that officials violated their parental rights. The school board failed to notify parents of “transgender” indoctrination in class and refused their requests to opt their children out. The parents received a damages payout of $15 million.
On the issue of boys using girls’ restrooms and changing rooms, Assistant AG Dhillon said that “Title IX demands that we guard the safety, dignity, and innocence of our youngest citizens—our children—by ensuring that they have unfettered access to bathrooms and locker rooms of their biological sex.”
If the Trump administration finds that the Michigan school districts are violating the law, they could lose federal funding.
