AI Could Help Improve Education for Distressed Communities — But It Won’t Take the Place of Involved Parents

In a Fox News op-ed, First Lady Melania Trump wrote about how AI could be a great tool in education.

“AI is a great equalizer and can level the educational playing field for all children. For generations, only wealthier families could afford tutors and specialized programs. AI changes this completely.”

AI could be a valuable resource for underserved communities, as FLOTUS noted.

Jack Brewer, a board member at the Center for Urban Renewal and Education and chairman of the Jack Brewer Foundation, recently appeared on FOX News to talk about AI and education.

Is AI a good idea in the classroom? Brewer said that the education gap in America is increasing and thinks AI can play a big part in reducing the gap. He said he goes into the inner-cities and works with juveniles who can’t read or write.

“People just can’t afford to pay for tutors,” he said. “Some households can’t afford to give kids the training that they really need so that they can compete in a changing world. I pray that AI can fill that gap so that we can start giving our most underserved kids that same educational opportunity.”

AI is here to stay, so why not use the technology to help these kids have a fighting chance? Anything will help at this point. But Brewer said we must have involved parents.

“You have to spend time with your kids,” he said. “Sports and extracurricular activities are so important.” Brewer added that we need to get back to old-school parenting. But the fatherlessness epidemic is making the education problem worse, he said.

AI can’t replace families, but perhaps it can make a difference.

Last December, Elon Musk’s AI company partnered with El Salvador to launch “the world’s first nationwide AI-powered education program.”

We could see similar programs in the U.S. in the future. The company’s partnership with El Salvador will impact over 5,000 government schools, more than one million students, and thousands of teachers.

“This initiative will create adaptive, curriculum-aligned tutoring that adjusts to each student’s pace, preferences, and mastery level—ensuring every child, from urban centers to rural communities, receives world-class education tailored to their needs,” according to the press release.
