CURE has joined Advancing American Freedom (AAF) and other allies in submitting an amicus (“friend of the court”) brief in Grand v. City of University Heights, Ohio. This case involves Daniel Grand, an Orthodox Jew, who had a prayer session in his home.
Since Orthodox Jews do not drive on the Sabbath or High Holidays, he invited others in his community to join him. After a neighbor complained to the mayor, the city blatantly disregarded the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and sent Mr. Grand a cease-and-desist letter, claiming a violation of zoning regulations.
In announcing the amicus brief, AAF General Counsel J. Marc Wheat stated, “The city’s order that Mr. Grand cease and desist from hosting religious gatherings in his home conflicts with the history of religious liberty in the United States, including America’s long tradition of home worship. The First Amendment enshrines Americans’ fundamental right to live out their faith. The Supreme Court should say so and rule for Mr. Grand.”
