This week, the Department of Justice (DOJ) announced that its National Fraud Enforcement Division has uncovered approximately $350 million in fraud across seven states in the Southeastern U.S. The cases involve abuse of programs such as Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), housing assistance, Medicare, and Small Business Administration loans.
This comes after DOJ convened a roundtable with the states to discuss their fraud efforts. As Assistant Attorney General Colin M. McDonald stated, “Defeating the fraud epidemic in our country requires all-hands-on-deck from our federal and state partners nationwide.”
This discovery is just the latest in federal action since President Trump established the Task Force to Eliminate Fraud back in March. The task force was established following the discovery of massive Medicaid fraud in the state of Minnesota, which federal prosecutors say could total in the billions.
Earlier this month, CURE joined conservative leaders in a Conservative Action Project memo commending the recent actions of the Office of Management and Budget to address government waste, fraud, and abuse in federal grantmaking.
CURE commends the Trump Administration for continuing to move forward in addressing fiscal irresponsibility and for working with the states to find and prosecute bad actors stealing from the American people. The government has a responsibility to shepherd services in an honest, accountable and efficient manner, thereby honoring the hard work of American taxpayers.
