This week, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) released a report analyzing qualified health plans (QHP) that may cover abortion services.
According to the report, 1,719 of these QHP’s provide elective abortion coverage. These Obamacare plans offer federal tax credits to consumers. The Hyde Amendment, which has applied to federal health care spending since 1976, prohibits the use of federal tax dollars to subsidize elective abortions.
The report came after House and Senate Republican leaders requested that GAO look into this matter. Upon the report’s release. Senator James Lankford (R-OK), chairman of the Senate Values Action Team, stated:
“As suspected, we now know that millions of Americans are forced each year to pay for elective abortion coverage that they do not want or agree with. The GAO findings confirm concerns we have raised for years about Obamacare and the Hyde Amendment. The accounting gimmick used in Obamacare does not protect Americans who have a moral objection to paying for the taking of a child’s life through elective abortion. As we approach 50 years of Hyde, this Administration should make sure its protections apply to Obamacare plans and restore the Separate Payment Rule so Americans know what their health plan covers.”
The Hyde Amendment protects Americans from having their hard-earned tax dollars used to fund procedures that violate their values and destroy innocent human life. CURE joins Senator Lankford and other pro-life leaders in Congress calling for the restoration of the Separate Payment Rule to ensure the Hyde protections are not subverted by Obamacare.
