Would you believe that a school in Jefferson County in Colorado was willing to allow a boy to share a bed with a girl on an overnight field trip, and without warning the girl or her parents?
The poor girl, then 11-years-old, was ambushed that day in 2023. She had no idea that she was to share a bed with a boy until he told her. She panicked, went to the bathroom and called her mother, who was a chaperone on the trip. The mother had her moved to a different room.
Girls and boys were supposed to be on different floors, according to school policy.
It goes without saying — but I’ll say it anyway — the girl’s parents, Joe and Serena Wailes, were not pleased. They’d received no notice that something like this would happen. After asking the school district for clarification, they filed a lawsuit. Other parents joined the lawsuit.
According to Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), their legal counsel, a lower court denied the plaintiffs’ motion to order the school to notify parents about room assignments and related matters. The parents asked the court to reconsider their motion.
AFL announced on Thursday that the parents submitted an opening brief to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit. They say the school’s “transgender” policy violates their children’s privacy, their rights as parents, and their free exercise of religion.
“Jefferson County Public Schools claims to ‘freely grant accommodations to all,’ yet they will not offer equal accommodations to religious students to access educational opportunities without sacrificing their bodily privacy,” said Kate Anderson, ADF senior counsel and director of the ADF Center for Parental Rights.
Imagine sending your 11-year-old daughter on an overnight trip only to learn that the school roomed her with a male student… without your knowledge or consent.
It happened to our clients in CO. And it’s why we are standing with them to sue the district.pic.twitter.com/T6tFVGzfGL
