How Moody Bible Institute Forced Chicago Public Schools to Rewrite the Rules to Protect Religious Beliefs

There’s an update to a lawsuit filed in November by Moody Bible Institute, a private Christian college, against the Chicago Board of Education.

Chicago Public Schools (CPS) blocked the college’s students from participating in the student-teacher training program because the school hires only like-minded individuals who share their religious beliefs, which CPS called discriminatory.

Alliance Defending Freedom, Moody Bible Institute’s legal counsel, announced that the lawsuit has been settled. ADF said that CPS has modified its Student Teacher Internship Agreement to allow the college’s students to participate in the student-teacher program.

Additionally, Moody Bible Institute is listed as an approved university partner on CPS’s web site.

We’re in a new era. The days of shutting out Christian institutions and individuals because they’re religious are gone.

“Chicago desperately needs more teachers to fill hundreds of vacancies, and Moody’s students will be well-equipped and qualified to help meet that need,” said Jeremiah Galus, ADF senior counsel. We’re hopeful other public officials will take note that they can’t inject themselves illegally and unconstitutionally into a religious non-profit’s hiring practices.”
