The Trump administration has issued another “Dear Colleague” letter that leftists in government schools won’t like.
The U.S. Department of Education (ED) recently directed schools to stop considering the skin color of trouble-making students before disciplining them.
In a new “Dear Colleague” letter, ED reminded bureaucrats in K-12 that they are obligated to respect parents’ rights under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and the Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment (PPRA). They must allow parents to review their children’s educational records and to stop keeping secrets. If they refuse, they will lose federal funding.
Parents, not not leftists in government schools, are responsible for their children’s upbringing. According to ED, schools have withheld “critical information from parents, such as maintaining records related to a child’s ‘gender’ separately in order to keep them hidden from parents.”
We all know the stories. Schools have ignored parents’ requests to opt children out of inappropriate instruction, including “transgender” indoctrination.
The U.S. Supreme Court held in Mahmoud v. Taylor (2025) that a Maryland school district violated parents’ rights after it failed to notify parents about “transgender” indoctrination and to allow them to opt out their children.
“Parents know what is best for their children,” said Frank Miller, SPPO director. “Yet, we continue to see schools adopt policies that shut parents out of their children’s lives at school. The Department is committed to putting parents back in the driver’s seat. We will fully enforce FERPA and PPRA and ensure parents have the information and authority they need to make decisions for their children.”
