Hyde Amendment’s 50th Anniversary Highlights Democrats’ Drift on Core Principles

As the federal government entered fiscal year 2027 on October 1st, CURE continued to highlight the Hyde Amendment’s 50th year of ensuring that taxpayer funds are not used to fund elective abortions through Medicaid or other health programs.

CURE Founder Star Parker noted this anniversary in her nationally syndicated column this week and pointed out that Democrats have drifted dramatically from their previous support of Hyde. They now advance a radical regime of abortion on demand throughout all nine months of pregnancy. Federal legislation supported by nearly every House and Senate Democrat would wipe out the Hyde Amendment, commonsense measures like parental notification, and conscience protections for doctors and nurses.

Star stated that the Democrats’ radical agenda is further exemplified by their virtual abandonment of protections under the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA), despite the fact that Senate Democrat Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and former Democrat President Bill Clinton were instrumental in RFRA’s enactment.

CURE’s Vice President for Government Relations and Coalitions, Marty Dannenfelser, shared Star’s column with every House and Senate Republican, as well as numerous conservative leaders. On Wednesday, he made a presentation to a group of conservative leaders in which he reinforced the important messages in Star’s column.

The 50th anniversary of the Hyde Amendment marks an important milestone, one that has saved millions of lives over the course of a half century. CURE will continue to advance the Hyde Amendment and its progeny in numerous federal programs so that we can protect innocent unborn children and the integrity of hard-earned taxpayers’ dollars.
