This School District Fought Equal Access for Christian Students — Now It Must Pay Damages

Why do government school officials need to be reminded that Christians have constitutional rights?

In February, we told you that the Moline-Coal Valley School District in Illinois treated Christian after-school clubs differently than secular clubs. Liberty Counsel (LC) sued on behalf of Child Evangelism Fellowship (CEF), which operates the Good News Clubs.

School officials denied the clubs equal access to three elementary schools, imposing fees and advertising restrictions. Secular clubs got better treatment.

A federal court ruled in CEF’s favor in February. LC announced that the court approved a consent decree, which permanently bars the school district from discriminating against CEF because of religion. The district also agreed to pay over $105,000 in damages, attorney’s fees, and costs.

The Moline-Coal Valley School District will give Good News Clubs the same access to facilities as secular groups. But bureaucrats got away with years of religious discrimination. Taxpayers are the ones paying for these lawsuits, but leftist school officials don’t seem to care. They continue to discriminate.
