CURE sent the following letter to Senate Republicans on Thursday:
The Senate will soon vote on S.1383, SAVE America Act. The Center for Urban Renewal and Education (CURE) commends Senate Republicans for advancing this important legislation and for including citizenship verification and voter ID requirements in the bill. We also support measures that would protect minors from gender transition procedures and prevent biological men from hijacking women’s sports.
At a crucial time in American history, Republicans allied with black Americans to pass the 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments to the Constitution – abolishing slavery, granting citizenship and civil rights to emancipated black Americans, and guaranteeing that the right to vote could not be denied based on “race, color, or previous condition of servitude.”
The SAVE America Act protects these important rights by ensuring that black Americans, and all Americans, are not disenfranchised by allowing ineligible people to cancel the impact of their votes. Those who deny that there is a serious risk of this happening are ignoring reality or seeking to gaslight the American people.
The Biden-Harris Administration released millions of aliens into the United States, including an estimated two million “gotaways”. Some states allow non-citizens to obtain driver’s licenses, thereby providing an opportunity to illegally register to vote in Federal elections. While only U.S. citizens are legally eligible to vote in Federal elections, the National Voter Registration Act effectively prohibits states from verifying citizenship when registering voters.
S. 1383 addresses this problem and affirms current law by requiring proof of citizenship to vote in Federal elections. The bill requires states to remove non-citizens from their voter rolls and gives them prompt, no-cost access to Federal databases with citizenship information. S. 1383 has accommodations for disabled Americans and allows applicants to provide documentation to resolve discrepancies [e.g., a name change] regarding their proof of U.S. citizenship.
CURE strives to fight poverty and restore dignity by supporting faith, freedom, and personal responsibility. We believe that protecting America’s electoral system is critical to ensuring the freedom and dignity of all Americans, including those in our most distressed communities. Therefore, we urge you to protect the integrity of our nation’s electoral system and the voting rights of all Americans by supporting the SAVE America Act.
Sincerely,
Donald T. Eason, president of CURE
Marty Dannenfelser, vice president of Government Relations & Coalitions at CURE
