The U.S. House of Representatives voted 218 to 213 on Wednesday to pass the SAVE America Act, a bill that would require proof of citizenship to register to vote and photo ID to vote in federal elections.
With a Republican majority in the House, passing this bill should have been quick and easy. But it was a slog.
Why would any lawmaker oppose security in voting and integrity in elections?
“The principle of the SAVE America Act is that voting as an American is a special and great privilege and responsibility,” Star Parker wrote in a recent column. “The only discrimination in this legislation is against those that do not see being an American, living free as an American and voting in our elections as a privilege and responsibility.”
At least 53 Republican senators and seven Democrats must vote to pass the SAVE America Act in the Senate for it to reach President Donald Trump’s desk and become law.
Most Americans support photo ID for voting, even Democrats, but Democratic senators will not factor this reality into their decision in the chamber. They will ignore what their own constituents want just to oppose whatever President Trump supports.
