Governor Mike Braun of Indiana signed a bill into law that men from playing on sports teams designated for women at state educational and certain private post-secondary institutions on the collegiate level. Teams must be male, female, or co-educational.
Under the law, these institutions must establish grievance procedures for a violation of the law.
Boys were already banned from joining female sports teams in K-12. Gov. Braun signed two related executive orders in March to extend the ban to the collegiate level and to declare that there are only two sexes: male and female. Now the executive action is codified — something that our U.S. Congress should be doing with President Donald Trump’s executive orders.
“Letting men compete on women’s sports teams denies equal opportunities for women and ignores the biological differences between the sexes, said Erica Steinmiller-Perdomo, legal counsel at Alliance Defending Freedom. “Indiana is right to ensure that female athletes of all ages have a fair and level playing field so that the integrity of women’s sports is protected.”
Gov. Braun also signed a bill to protect parents’ rights over their children’s education and upbringing. From the bill:
Prohibits a governmental entity from: (1) advising, directing, or coercing a child to withhold certain information from the child’s parent; or (2) denying a child’s parent access to certain information. Allows a parent to bring an action against a governmental entity for certain violations and provides for certain relief.
