We told you in March that a KIPP elementary school in Nashville backed down after penalizing a Christian teacher who refused to read a homosexual “marriage” book to his students.
On the day the book was to be read, Eric Rivera switched classes with another teacher. No harm, no foul, but school officials wanted to punish him. They reassigned him and threatened termination.
First Liberty Institute, Rivera’s legal counsel, sent a demand letter on his behalf, reminding officials about Rivera’s First Amendment right to religious freedom.
The school cleared Rivera’s record and allowed teachers to ask another teacher to switch lessons — without punishment.
First Liberty announced on Thursday that KIPP schools in Nashville have removed several of the objectionable books and materials from the curriculum. The schools even told the state’s attorney general about the removals.
“We are thrilled that KIPP Nashville voluntarily removed books that could run afoul of parents’ rights under the Constitution and Tennessee law,” said Cliff Martin, senior counsel at First Liberty. “It is paramount that religious views be respected in schools.”
