In an otherwise disappointing election for conservatives, voters in four states, including two blue states, approved ballot measures to protect female sports.
Women deserve fair competition and equal opportunities, and allowing men to join their sports teams defeats the entire purpose of fair competition and equal opportunities for women. Voters in Arizona, Colorado, Nebraska, and Washington acknowledged the absurdity and chose common sense.
Arizona’s Proposition 318 passed with 58.94% of the vote. The measure bars schools and athletic associations are barred from allowing boys and men to join female sports teams. The measure also restricts access to spaces designated for either sex
Colorado’s Proposition 134, which passed with 52.33% of the vote, requires student athletes to participate on men’s or women’s school and collegiate athletic teams that match their sex.
Nebraska’s Initiative Measure 442 added protections for female school and college sports to their state constitution, making those protections harder for future lawmakers to undo. Voters approved this measure by 68.05% of the vote.
Fifty-seven percent of voters in Washington approved Initiative 638. School districts and nonprofit organizations that regulate interscholastic activities must bar male students from competing with and against female students on sports teams.
Election night wasn’t all bad.
Voters in Colorado and Washington did what Democratic lawmakers refused to do: protect women’s privacy and their safety. On this issue, voters on both sides of the aisle should agree.
