After an investigation, the U.S. Department of Justice has found that the University of California at San Diego’s medical school discriminated against individuals based on race in admissions.
The U.S. Supreme Court in 2023 ruled 6-3 that Harvard University’s and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s racial preference admissions policies violate the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment.
Racial discrimination for any reason is illegal.
“Rather than rely on MCAT scores or GPA, San Diego Med’s shadow application process unlawfully judged applicants for admission based on their race,” said Harmeet K. Dhillon, assistant attorney general of the Civil Rights Division. “San Diego Med’’ blatant efforts to prioritize race are illegal, and we will end these practices.”
Whites and Asians generally score higher on standardized tests. Because Blacks and Hispanics generally score lower, bureaucrats lower standards for these applicants. When a lower scoring applicant is admitted, a corresponding higher scoring applicant is rejected.
Racial discrimination in governments across the country is insidious. Proponents of this embarrassing and unfair practice have appealed to “diversity” as an excuse for violating the Constitution and federal law.
No government should be assessing individuals based on the color of their skin. Americans fought and died to eliminate this practice.
To comply with the law, educational institutions that receive federal funds must admit students on a race-neutral basis. Schools attempt to get away with racial discrimination by using proxies for race, like “hardships,” which also are illegal.
“The Department will continue to monitor and ensure their compliance with Title VI and SFFA’s prohibition on race-conscious admissions.”
