Pro-life leaders want answers from President Donald Trump’s nominee to lead the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Liberty Counsel (LC) and Liberty Counsel Action joined a coalition of 50 pro-life leaders in a letter (PDF) urging Dr. Heidi Overton to restore abortion pill safeguards that were in place before the Biden administration loosened them.
The Center for Urban Renewal and Education (CURE) signed on to a similar letter earlier this year asking the president to hold his administration accountable for protecting women from the dangers of abortion pills.
At issue for pro-lifers: the Biden administration eliminated the in-person dispensing requirement for mifepristone during the COVID-19 pandemic. Doctors can prescribe the drug through telehealth and send it through the mail.
The pro-life coalition says those changes put women at risk and make it easier to get around state pro-life laws.
“We are told that the FDA is conducting an ongoing study of mifepristone,” the letter reads. “However, that study has supposedly been ongoing for nearly two years. The question is straightforward: Will Dr. Overton at least agree to revert to the policy in place before the Biden administration, a policy that provided at least some minimal safeguards and medical oversight for women until that elusive review is complete?”
Will Dr. Overton restore the safeguards?
“President Trump’s FDA has not yet restored the abortion pill’s safety restrictions and continues to abide by Biden-era policies on chemical abortions,” said Mat Staver, LC founder and chairman.
The Biden-era policy has lasted long enough. It’s time to put women and unborn children first.
